Devon 50 and your patrol have shown its confidence in
you, and elected you as the Patrol Leader of your patrol.
This is probably your first chance to lead others, and it
often leads to the Patrol Leader job next time, and a big
responsibility.
Relax!
You are not alone, and you are not the first young man to face this
challenge.
Every leader starts with little or no experience.
What you need is scout spirit and willingness to work at it. Think
about what past patrol leaders did well.
You can do that!
Think about what they didn’t do so well.
You can do better!
This handbook is only one of the ways you can
figure out what to do.
There is also an official BSA Junior Leader Handbook, which contains
additional material.
And, of course the Boy Scout Handbook contains all the things a scout
needs to know, you just need to know it a little better.
The Troop staff is there to help new Patrol Leaders
and APLs get started, and if you have any problems later on.
They have been in your shoes, as new leaders, at some point.
The Scoutmaster and the other Devon 50 adult leaders are
also ready willing and able to help.
Just ask!
And when you get going, remember that
the Patrol
Leader and the Assistant Patrol Leader are a team, to share the workload when the
going gets heavy. Nothing worth while comes easy. You will look
back on this as one of the best times in your life.
Take a deep breath, make up your mind to be the best
you can,- and start leading!
