Devon 50 uses a system of
Patrol Points
It helps show how well a Patrol is doing. Participation and
achievement are cornerstones of scouting, and that’s what we
award points for. The Patrol Point Sheet is what you use to
register patrol points. It lists all the things you get patrol
points for, and has a place for you to note what each scout did and
achieved. It's a good practice to have the Assistant Patrol Leader
fill in the Patrol Points form. It gives him a better understanding
of what goes on, and prepares him for the Patrol Leader's job next
year.
If you have an
active patrol, and you follow your plan for the year, your points
will add up quickly. Every month we will list the points score for
each patrol in the Cabin, and award Patrol-of-the-month for the
patrol with the highest monthly total. Also, at our June Court of
Honor at the end of the scouting year, the highest point total gets
recognized with the Lenker-Flood plaque, where the names of the
patrol and its leader are inscribed. It’s a great feeling to be
the best!

Every year we see
one or two patrols with a low point score. That tells us immediately
that there is something wrong. Either the patrol isn’t getting
anything done, or the patrol leader is too disorganized to get the
points sheet filled in and handed in at the Greenbar meeting. Not
good! If that starts to happen to you, your patrol members will
probably let you know that you are not doing your job, or they start
staying away.
They look to you
to lead them, and to represent them at the troop level. Using the
patrol point sheet properly will give both them and you a real sense
of accomplishment, every month. Beats a kick in the tail every time!
