Devon 50 Court of Honor Salutes Eagle #294

Christopher Calligan – #294
I was born in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on July 31, 1993. I have lived in Strafford, Pennsylvania all my life and gone through the Tredyffrin-Eastown schools. I am currently a sophomore at Conestoga High School.
I started scouting as a cub scout with Pack 47. These were fun times and I stayed friends with many of the boys from Cub scouts. In April 2005 I bridged over to Boy Scout Troop, Devon 50. I joined my Dad and my brother at Devon 50 who were both very active in the troop. I remember being very small back then, but everyone was nice and I immediately liked it. I’ve been at Devon 50 for six years now. I’ve had many fun and memorable experiences. All the trips were very cool and very exciting. I remember the caving trips, white water rafting, rock climbing, the mystery trips, the ski trips, and all the hiking trips. Each and every one of them was amazing. I also enjoyed my summers at Camp Horseshoe. I have attended every summer first as a camper and for the past two years as an employee.
Some of the high points of my scouting experience were; hiking in Philmont with my dad and other scouts from Devon 50, receiving the J.Barton Rettew Jr. Award in 2006 for the greatest rank advancement of any scout at Devon 50 and receiving the Daniel T. Kilcullen Award in 2008 as voted on by my fellow scouts. I have tried to contribute to Devon 50 by being nice to all the new scouts since I remember how it made me feel when the older scouts were nice to me when I was new. I have also contributed to the troop by being a top wreath salesman every year. I estimate I have sold over $11,000 in wreaths since I joined Devon 50.
I have served in a variety of leadership roles. I started as Quartermaster is 2005. The next year I became Den Chief for one of the dens at Pack 47. In September 2007 I was the assistant patrol leader for the Hawk Patrol and the next year I was patrol leader for the Eagle Patrol. I was called out to the Order of the Arrow in 2007 and achieved Brotherhood in 2009.
My Eagle project was building the sandbox at the Freedom Playground in Haverford. This was a great project which involved lots of planning and an intense week of building. It was amazing to see the playground come together in just one week. The playground is accessible to all children, including those with disabilities, so it is a great resource for the community. It is also a more interesting playground because of its Philadelphia theme. The sandbox has a Jersey Shore motif featuring “Lucy the Margot Elephant”. I want to thank all the scouts that came out to help. I also want to thank the members of the Conestoga Boys Tennis Team that came and helped. I especially want to thank my Dad whose skilled workmanship was worth more than any other 10 people at the site. Finally I want to thank Mrs. Phillips, my mentor at the Freedom Playground.
Outside of scouts I play on the tennis team and the squash team at Conestoga High School. I like snow boarding and hanging out with my friends. After high school I plan to go to college.
