The Devon 50 Court of Honor was convened
October 15, 2008
by Al Plambeck, Devon 50 Trustee Chairman Emeritus
Charge given by J. B. Rettew, Devon 50 Trustee
John A. Monnier – #282
John was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1992 and he has lived in Strafford all his life. He has five older sisters and nine nieces and nephews.
John’s road to Eagle began in the fall of 1999 when he joined Pack 111 at Devon Elementary as a Tiger Cub. He has many memories of fun times he spent as a cub scout, including selling popcorn at the farmer’s market, making pinewood derby cars and camping out at Camp Jarvis. In January, 2003 John earned the Arrow of Light award and bridged to Devon 50. Two of his scouting mentors during his Cub years were his den chiefs, Kurt Rohrbeck and Darren Scott, who are now both Devon 50 Eagles.
John enjoys the fellowship that scouting has to offer and has made many friends while at Devon 50. He began his leadership positions by spending two years as a Den Chief to the Webelos den of Pack 111. He then served as the Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader for the Hawk patrol, and most recently he was the Senior Patrol Leader at Camp Horseshoe just last summer. For that service, he was honored by his fellow scouts in receiving the Silver Buckle Award. While at Devon 50, John has especially enjoyed the ski trips to Elk Mountain every winter and the Boy Scout National Jamboree which he attended in the summer of 2005. He also enjoyed participating as an instructor in the leadership training program last month. (Just don’t ask him about his canoeing experience!)
John’s Eagle Project took place at the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, a non-profit education organization dedicated to helping students, teachers and citizens gain a greater awareness and appreciation of the principles of a free and democratic society. He scraped and painted over 300 feet of wrought iron railing that surrounds the organization’s main function room and overlooks their rose garden. During one of the workdays, the foundation was host to service men and women who had just returned from Iraq. John and his team of workers were able to participate in a short ceremony honoring these heroes, and to thank them for their service.
John is a sophomore at Conestoga High School where he is a snare drum player on the drum line. He enjoys spending time with his friends and is looking forward to getting his driver‘s license. He plans to attend college in a warm climate and at this point is considering becoming a guidance counselor.
John would like to thank all the adults who volunteer their time to Devon 50 for helping him on his way, and his fellow scouts for making the journey more enjoyable. Special thanks go to his parents for their love and support.
