Devon 50 Court of Honor Salutes Eagle #280

The Devon 50 Court of Honor was convened
June 14, 2008
by Gerry Cavanaugh, Devon 50 Trustee Chairman
Charge given by J. B. Rettew, Devon 50 Trustee
Kurt Steven Rohrbeck – #280
Kurt Steven Rohrbeck was born on April 24, 1991 and has
lived in Devon, Pennsylvania for his entire life. He lives with his parents,
Jeff and Stacey, and twin brother, Scott. He has a sister, Jackie, who is a
junior at Penn State.
Kurt was first involved in scouting with Cub Scout Pack 111, where many of his
friends joined him through Tiger Cubs. After moving through the ranks of Cub
Scouts, he was not sure whether or not he wanted to move on to Boy Scouts, but
a bit of pressuring from his friends was enough to get him to move on to Troop
50. His first trip in Devon 50, the caving trip in May 2002, is the one that
he will have the most vivid memories of, as the hard rain did not stop him and
his friends from enjoying themselves. He stuck with the troop and became
Senior Patrol Leader in February 2007, which he believed to be his most
rewarding role in scouting.
Many trips stuck out to Kurt. In addition to the aforementioned caving trip,
he remembers each of his seven weeks at Camp Horseshoe, including in 2006,
when he and the "Dream Team" of senior scouts led the troop to four marching
trophies, and in 2007, when he received the Silver Buckle after leading the
troop for a week as Senior Patrol Leader. He also enjoyed the ski trips,
winter campouts at Horseshoe, and fall backpacking trips, especially the Black
Forest Trail in the fall after he joined the troop.
For his Eagle Scout project, Kurt built an observation deck at the Vanguard
School. Through him and his friends' dedicated efforts, the team built a
raised platform off of which students at the Vanguard School can view wildlife
in a nearby area of grass and plants. The project took many days of hard work,
and the team was quite satisfied with their end result.
In his spare time, Kurt likes to listen to music, play trombone, play video
games, and spend time on the computer. He is a member of Conestoga's varsity
boys swim team and is the president of the school's Marching Band.
Kurt would like to thank his family for pushing him to get his
Eagle--especially his dad, the Scoutmaster--as well as all of his friends for
convincing him to join Scouts, the older scouts who helped guide him when he
joined the troop, anyone who helped him with his Eagle Project, and all of the
adult leadership at Devon 50. Without these people, this would not have been
possible.
