Alex DeLuccia

The Devon 50 Court of Honor was convened June 14, 2008
by Gerry Cavanaugh, Devon 50 Trustee Chairman

Charge given by J. B. Rettew, Devon  50 Trustee

Alex DeLuccia – #279

Alex DeLuccia was born on the Fourth of July, 1992 in Bryn Mawr, PA. He is the oldest of three boys, and spent his first two years living in West Chester, PA. He and his family moved to their current home in Berwyn in 1994. Alex began his academic career at Trinity Nursery School in Berwyn, and subsequently attended Devon Elementary and T/E Middle School. It was at Devon, in second grade, that he decided to join Cub Scout Pack 111. Many of today’s senior Devon 50 scouts were in his first den, including Mitchell Conery, Will Batt, Pat McGill, and Dylan Moriarty. Alex would like to thank Ms Sommer, his den leader at 111, for her hard work, support, and kindness through the years. Alex considers Ms. Sommer a major influence in his scouting years.

In 2003, Alex joined Devon 50. Through the years, Alex has served as a den chief, troop scribe, and troop guide. Some of Alex’s favorite activities have included the backpacking trips, especially the 2006 High Adventure trip to Mt. Washington and Acadia National Park expertly organized and run by Mr. Pioch. Other highlights included the Elk Mountain ski trips, the Vermont skiing mystery trip (thank you Calligans!), his summers at Camp Horseshoe, OA weekends, and attending the National Jamboree in Virginia in 2005.

Alex attends Conestoga, where he will enter 11th grade in the fall. One of the reasons he has been less active in Devon 50 in recent years is that he is a member of the Conestoga Crew team. The team practices or races 6 days per week, from January to June. Alex’s recent crew highlights have included a first place finish at the New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Championships in April (JV quad), and winning bronze at the Canadian Secondary School International Rowing Championships in St. Catherines, Ontario on June 1st (junior double).

Alex plays upright bass in the Conestoga Orchestra, and electric bass in the Jazz Ensemble. An avid musician, Alex is also in several rock bands, where he plays both guitar and bass. In 2003 Alex earned his black belt in Tang Soo Doo, a Korean martial art of self-defense.

For his Eagle project, Alex replanted a riparian corridor at the Waterloo Mills Preserve in Devon, PA. He and his team planted, staked and sheltered 330 new native trees / shrubs along the Darby Creek, repairing a critical stretch of deer-damaged wetland forest in an environmentally-sensitive area of the preserve. In addition, Alex constructed and installed wood duck / screech owl houses, and sheltered / staked existing young saplings within the corridor.

Alex would like to thank all of the parents, friends and leaders who have helped him over his years in scouting. He would especially like to thank Mr. Rohrbeck and Mr. Monnier for their guidance and support in recent years. He would also like to thank his parents for helping him constantly along the trail towards the rank of Eagle.
