Peter Fonville Makela

Devon 50 Eagle Scout #242

]Pete was born in Frederick, Maryland on November 23,1985. He spent the first eight years of his life living in Middletown, in Frederick County, MD, and there at the beginning of second grade, he joined the Middletown Cub Scout Pack. That very next summer, he and his family moved up to the Valley Forge/Phoenixville area. He entered the third grade at the Montgomery School in Chester Springs, started attending Great Valley Presbyterian Church, and joined Cub Scout Pack 73. Continuing on through the elementary grades, he became a Webelo Scout, earned his Arrow of Light Award in 1997, and subsequently, joined Devon 50, following in the footsteps of his older brothers, Mark and Jonathan. Also, in 1997 he started sixth grade at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr.

At Devon 50, Pete has been both a member of the Hawk Patrol and the Stag Patrol He has served two years as a Den Chief He was Assistant Patrol Leader of the Stag Patrol. Currently, he is serving as Chaplain’s Aide.

Pete has attended Camp Horseshoe every summer since he joined Devon 50. He has always sold at least the wreath quota every year, and this year he was top Salesman from his patrol and a member of the $1,000 club. Pete has earned a total of 27 merit badges. At the February 2001 banquet, Pete was tapped out for the Order of the Arrow.

Pete participated on two of Devon 50 wilderness canoe trips. Last summer he canoed with the Troop in the North Woods of Maine. The summer before last, he canoed with the Troop in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota and Canada. This trip was especially meaningful, because Pete's older brother, Mark, who was a Scout Guide for the summer at BSA Northern Tier High Adventure Camp in Ely, Minnesota, accompanied them on their canoe adventure. Special memories were forged on that trip!

For his Eagle Scout project, he and his volunteers power-sprayed, cleaned, and painted the outdoor amphitheatre at Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge. This included the white backdrop of the stage and the stage floor. Shortly after the completion of the project last August, the Freedom's Foundation was able to invite the public to summer band concerts on the lawn in front of the amphitheatre. Pete wishes to thank his two brothers, Mark and Jonathan, Mark Adamiak, Mike DeMul, Anthony Lee, Gabe and Eli Roxby, and Dan Spangler for their invaluable help. Their combined efforts represent 165 hours of community service!

With special note, Pete's two older brothers, his father, and grandfather are all Eagle Scouts too! Pete is, in a sense, a third generation Eagle Scout! Mark earned his Eagle Award from Braddock Heights, MD Troop 278 in 1994. Jonathan earned his Eagle from Devon 50 in 1997. Pete's father, Glenn, earned his Eagle from Ft. Bragg, CA Troop 53 in 1962, and his grandfather, John B. Coates, Jr., M. D. earned his Eagle Award from Edgehill, PA Troop I in 1928. We are so very, very proud of these accomplishments!

With regards to some future plans, as a member of The Shipley School crew team, Pete will be rowing in a Penn AC summer rowing program. Pete also plans to take a painting course at Moore College of Art this summer. In the Fall, Pete will return to Shipley as a 10th grader, where he will be a member of the Student Council, the cross- country team, and the crew team.
