by J. B. Rettew III, President of the Board of Trustees of Devon 50, Inc.,
and Devon 50 Eagle Scout #29.
Matthew Thomas Waxler - #228
Matthew Thomas Waxler was born on June 19, 1980 in Norristown, Pa. He began his scouting career with Pack 73 in Phoenixville under the leadership of Packmaster Brian Maloney. During this time, Matt was awarded the National Merit Award for lifesaving for saving his sister, Megan. who was choking on a piece of candy.
After earning his Arrow of light, Matt joined Devon 50 on May 28, 1992 under the leadership of scoutmaster Neal Chippendale. He was originally assigned to the Hawk patrol, and at the end or his first year, he was recognized for his skills in rifle shooting. During the next five years, Matt held many positions, including Assistant Patrol leader, Librarian and Patrol Leader, a position he now holds in the Fox patrol. He was elected to the Order of the Arrow in February, 1996, and is currently an ordeal member of the OA. He has also been a member of the $1000 club for wreath sales for four of his five years with the troop. His favorite trips were camping at Gettysburg, as he is fascinated by the Civil War, and the mystery trip to the Groton Submarine Base in Connecticut.
For his Eagle project, Matt worked with the Willistown Police Department under officer John Narcise, to put together and distribute information packets to new residents of the township. These packets included information on 911, emergency services, hospitals and doctors, and other useful information. The project was an integral part of the Neighborhood Policing program originated by officer Narcise.
Matt's hobbies include paintball, computers, and he is a diehard Trekkie. In the faIl or 1998, Matt will continue his education at Penn State University, where he plans to study meteorology.
