by J. B. Rettew III, President of the Board of Trustees of Devon 50, Inc.,
and Devon 50 Eagle Scout #29.
Gary Allen Alloway - #226
Gary Allen Alloway was born on January 19, 1980 outside
of Pittsburgh, Pa. When he was 5 years old he moved to Paoli with his mother, father, brother, and sister. After two years at Valley Forge Elementary School, Gary moved on to second grade where he went to Hillside Elementary School. It was there that Gary first got involved with scouting, joining the Cub Scouts. After numerous den meetings, Pinewood Derbys, and beginner camping trips, he then joined Devon 50 in 1991.Under his first patrol leader, Tom Eybye, Gary received hi
s Tenderfoot and second class ranks and quickly moved up in the patrol becoming Assistant Patrol Leader of the Beaver Patrol in 1993. Then in 1994, He became the patrol leader of the patrol and led them on many fun outings and to many learning experiences. That year, Gary led all patrols in patrol competitions and won the cooking contest with his culinary skills The following year, he became troop scribe, a position that he still holds today. Gary enjoyed almost every trip that Devon 50 had to offer but his fondest memories are of the 1993 National Jamboree, the caving trips, the ski trips, the Cedarlands trek, going to England, hanging out on all the weekends at Camp Jarvis, and lastly, the trip to Colorado. He still plans to finish his high adventure career with a trip to Philmont.For his Eagle Project, Gary constructed a
handicapped ramp for a family with a child in a wheelchair. The project was completed this fall with the help of many scouts along with Gary's family and friends.Presently, Gary is
finishing up his Junior year at Conestoga High School where he has always been on the first honor roll. Gary is also involved with wrestling and tennis along with being an editor of the school newspaper, The SPOKE, and a member of the Academic Competition Team and National Honor Society. He plans to attend college after high school but has not decided on a school or a major yet.
