Jonathan was born on August 12, 1981 in Vicenza, Italy. The following year, he and his family moved to Middletown, Maryland, where they lived for the next 12 years. There he attended Middletown Elementary School and Middletown Middle school. In Maryland, Jonathan began his interest in scouting in the second grade by joining Braddock Heights Cub Scout Pack 278.After earning his Arrow of Light, he joined Braddock Heights BSA troop 278 in May, 1992. With the Maryland troop, he earned the rank of Star and served as a WebeIos Den Chief. In' the summer of 1994.Jonathan, his parents, and his two brothers moved to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and in the fall of 1994, Jonathan transferred to Devon 50.
Jonathan is a member of the Hawk Patrol, and he is currently serving as Patrol Leader. Last year, Jonathan was a Webelos Den Chief for his younger brother's den in the Phoenixville Cub Scout Pack 73. With the wreath sales this year, he was top patrol salesman, accumulating over $1000. Jonathan's most memorable trip with Devon 50 were the 1996 International Jamboree in England, the 1995 Colorado trip, and the 1995 C&O Canal bike trek
Jonathan is a third generation Eagle Scout. His older brother, Mark; his father Glenn; and his grandfather John B. Coates Jr. are all Eagle Scouts. For Jonathan's Eagle Scout project, he helped improve the Valley Forge National Park. He saved a grove of two-hundred year old walnut trees, tore down and removed unsafe and illegal deer stands from newly acquired park lands, cleared a pasture area of metal seedling stakes and removed flood debris from acres of parkland alongside the Schuylkill River.
Jonathan is in the ninth grade at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr. He is a member of his fall and spring high school crew team, actively rowing in races on the Schuylkill River and in races in New Jersey and Delaware. He is also a member of Great Valley Presbyterian Church where he is active with the senior high youth group. Last summer, Jonathan helped finish the building of houses for Native Americans on a Sioux Indian reservation in South Dakota.
