Gerald F. Cavanaugh, Jr., better know as "JR", was born on July 21, 1980 and has resided with his parents and sister Sarah in Malvern, Pa. all his life.
JR joined scouting while attending Hillside Elementary School with Pack 112. He completed his Arrow of Light and crossed over to Devon 50 in May 1992.
Gerry earned the Thomas Stillwell Enthusiasm Award in 1993 as well as Scout of the Year Award for 1993-94, and again in 1994-95. He is a member of the $1,000 club for wreath sales in 1993 & 94, and has continued to meet his quota every year. JR was the recipient of the J.B. Rettew III trophy as the Patrol leader of the Year for 1994-95 ,as the leader of Wolf Patrol, while also earning his Den chief lanyard for his service to Den 5, Pack 112. As Patrol leader of Wolf Patrol he was the recipient of the Pennington Plaque for inter-patrol athletics and the Lenker-Flood Plaque for the highest standing in the Troops point system. Because of his demonstration of leadership he was selected to attend the Council "Junior Leadership Training" in May 1995. JR has attended Camp Horseshoe for five year has been awarded the "Silver Buckle" by his fellow scouts. JR is presently serving the Troop as an Assistant Senior Patrol leader.
JR is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Lodge 22, and has participated in many service events at Camp Horseshoe. He enjoys camping and hiking and has been a participant in the Adirondack, NY high adventure trip, earning the "50 Miler" badge. This past summer he completed a very strenuous Philmont trek with five other scouts and two adults and will again be awarded his second "50 Miler" upon completion of service work. In the summer of 1995, JR and several other Scouts and Adults, completed a high adventure trip to Colorado, enjoying the great outdoors, climbing Mt. Lois, with an elevation of 14,014 feet, horseback riding, white water rafting, walking and climbing the National Sand Dunes, a local rodeo and the motorcycle riding at the Dunn Ranch.
His Eagle Project, completed at the Pennsylvania Resources Council, is to be a specialized teaching garden named in honor of Devon 50 Eagle Scout #207 Michael Imperato. The PRC Environmental Center is a non-profit teaching source of information concerning environmental impact on our daily lives. "Michael~s Garden" is to demonstrate the proper plant selection to minimize the impact caused by the local deer population.
JR is continuing his education at Conestoga High School and has yet to determine his life's goals. He is perfecting his drumming skills as a member of the Conestoga Band and playing for pleasure.
