The Court of Honor was convened June 15, 1996 at 6:30 PM by J. B. Rettew III, President of the Board of Trustees of Devon 50, Inc., and Devon 50 Eagle Scout #29.



Joel Vincent Furfari - #219

Joel was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 26, 1978. As a young child he lived in Pittsburgh, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Charlotte, North Carolina. It was in Charlotte that Joel first joined Cub Scouts. He also participated in Cub Scouts in Avon Connecticut and as a member of Cub Pack 113 in Berwyn

Beginning nine years ago, when his family moved to this area, Joel became familiar with Devon Troop 50, which he joined upon graduating from Webelos. He became a member of Beaver Patrol, and stayed in that patrol for four years.

Joel's favorite trips with Devon 50 have included overnight sailing on the Chesapeake, the mystery trip to the Outer Banks, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, and spelunking in West Virginia.

After attending summer camp at Camp Horseshoe for six summers, Joel became a member of the Aquatics Staff, and earned his BSA Lifeguard. He also attended the National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill during the summer of 1993. While at the Jamboree, Joel served as Patrol Leader of the "Bushwacker Patrol", which had scouts from Troop 50 and Troop 22 of Unionville.

Joel's favorite hobby is music. He spends much of his time each day playing the bass guitar and listening to recordings of jazz and the blues. Another activity he takes part in is Ultimate Frisbee. Joel, and a friend, formed the Ultimate Frisbee club at Conestoga High School. Joel also played on Conestoga's hockey team for four years.

In the future, Joel hopes to build a career as a journalist. He was on Conestoga's school newspaper, "The Spoke," throughout high school. He won numerous awards for writing and editing. Joel has worked for the Suburban and Wayne Times, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Joel is now attending the University of Maryland at College Park, where he is majoring in Journalism. He plans to work for the "Diamondback," UMCP's school newspaper. Joel lives in Berwyn with his mother, Marilyn. and his younger brother, Keegan.
