Brian James Copeland - #212

For his Eagle project, Brian instituted a food bank at St. Monica's School to service the needy in his parish. Over the summer of 1994 he planned and advertised the project. By October the food bank was functioning and by April the administration of the project became self-sustaining as it was turned over to the school's student council members whom Brian had trained.

The project involved building a storage area in the basement of St. Monica's, securing donated shelving and bins from Wayne Tru-Value hardware store, winning the support of St. Monica's students and families and designing a logistical plan for the collection of a wide variety of nutritious food items that would be sensitive to the bank's inventory at any one time in order to avoid an excess of some items and a shortage of other necessary items.

The first Friday of each month was designated as collection day. Each grade of St. Monica's brought in foods from a specific list that they received the week before collection day. On the Saturday morning after each drive, Brian and his Devon 50 recruits transferred the food to the basement, sorted it and placed it in the storage area they had built. An updated inventory was then made. Distribution to needy families was managed by Father Tom Gillen and later by a number of parish volunteers. By the end of each month, it was time to make new lists for each grade indicating the low inventory items they could contribute.

So successful was the project, that food distribution has widened to include: the Heart of Camden, Regini Mundy Priory and the Sister of Charity.

Brian is an Order of the Arrow ordeal member, winner of the Silver Buckle at Camp Horseshoe and the new Senior Patrol Leader for Devon 50. He will serve in this capacity until next June.

Brian, son of Kennon and Mary Ann of Wayne, will be a junior at Conestoga High School this fall.
