A leader is someone you want to follow!
Think about it...

Page Updated 1/28/2001
Leadership is a very important part of scouting, and something that will benefit you the rest of your life, no matter what you do. All scouts are leaders as they grow in scouting!

You MUST serve in a leadership assignment to earn rank advancement beyond First Class.

Devon 50 will train you for leadership

You will practice leadership in many assignments in the Troop

You will learn leadership by watching leaders, teaching leaders, - and by being one!

Introduction to Leadership When you first get a leadership role, one of the Devon 50 leaders ( a scout or an adult) will sit down and discuss leadership with you. We will talk about the basic idea of leadership, and we will discuss the responsibilities you are about to take on.  You should also talk to scouts that had the job before, to get their ideas on what the job means
Troop JLT Every year, Devon 50 conducts Junior Leader Training (JLT) for all the leaders in the troop. Much of it is about how to lead and various forms and styles of leadership. We also discuss all the  leadership jobs in the troop, and in particular, we spend a lot of time with the new Patrol Leaders and assistant Patrol Leaders. We also have games and relaxation time, so it's both fun and a good way to learn about being a leader.
Council JLT In May each year, Chester County Council organizes Junior Leadership Training for a few experienced scout from all the Troops in the Council. The scouts spend two weekends at Camp Ware, going through a great program of fun and learning, in much more depth.
Leadership Learning Being taught leadership is only a part of learning to be a leader. There are more (and often better) ways to learn as well. You can start right now.
Watch leaders in the troop and in other places. Think about what you like about their leadership, what you think they do well. Are there things you don't like? - that teaches you something too!. Talk to others scouts about leadership, - both leaders and scouts that aren't yet leaders. All have some ideas about leadership that are worth picking up. And when you are a leader, - don't be afraid of making mistakes, - EVERYBODY makes mistakes. Just learn from them, - and listen to what people tell you, even if they only speak in body-language.....
